El Paso GOP vs El Paso GOP

Image
Rather than readying themselves for a fight in the midterms/gubernatorial cycle, the El Paso GOP apparently thinks their time and energy is better spent fighting with one another. Just kidding, no amount of money or organizing could make the El Paso GOP competitive in any partisan race.  But nonetheless, the civil war of personalities has escalated to the point of Seeberger retaining an attorney. Multiple members of the El Paso GOP provided me copies of a Cease and Desist Letter that has recently been filed.  What practical impact does it make? None, its pretty much Seeberger trying to flex his muscles. The letter basically says that he wants Ray Baca and the County Executive Committee of the El Paso Republican Party to stop referring to Ray Baca as the Party Chair and to basically undo anything they have done so for.  He's giving him a few days to do it - or else.  Not exactly clear on what exactly the what else is, but you can pretty much try to sue anyone for anyt...

Lower Valley Leader Passes Away

Image
Fabens ISD Board President and long-time community leader "Coach" Rey Sepulveda has passed away after a fight with cancer.  Coach, as he was affectionately known around Fabens, was a long-time advocate for a range of issues in Fabens including education.  I had a chance to sit and talk with him when he was a candidate for House District 75 and was challenging Mary Gonzalez for her seat.  I met him at a Whataburger in the valley and we had lunch and talked for about two hours. He understood exactly what he was up against. He knew he wasn't likely to win and that she basically had every advantage possible. But he didn't back down and stayed in the race despite the odds.  You gotta admire someone who knows the fight in front of them, knows they don't have the resources to win, but is willing to stand on principle for what they care about.  I remember him as jovial, with an infectious laugh and a strong handshake. But my biggest takeaway from Coach was his commitmen...

EP GOP Selects New Chair; Seeberger Took Assets?

Image
So the Monday Night Massacre turned out to be pretty funny. And just about every ReTrumplican in El Paso from Fabens to Canutillo is upset that I aired their dirty laundry. You know for a blog that "nobody reads", they sure get bent out of shape and quote it chapter and verse, don't they? I feel like Republicans think I'm Sancho or something. They deny me in public, but late at night, when no one is looking, they come looking for Bid Daddy LionStar on the DL.  There was some confusion in the local twitterverse about what faction ended up on the winning side of everything the other night.  The local Republicans that took part in the Monday Night Massacre are trying to pretend that the Party isn't a giant desmadre and that they all came out united. You should know better than to believe people like the Surrats at this point. The local GOP is anything but united and Michael Surrat must have had a few too many of his nuts in his mouth if he thinks for one second that ...

City Council Members Complain About Work Hours

Image
Strap in people because this one is going to annoy you. If you thought how the city is handling the distribution of the virus was bad, wait til you hear this one... Some members of city council are whining about the length of city council meetings. In other words they are complaining about how long they have to work - while working from home - in a job they asked voters to put them in. I mean we aren't talking about soldiers manning a post in some far off desert, or some sailor making repairs on the deck of a ship in the North Atlantic. We aren't talking about a nurse who pulled a double, a cop on his 9th straight day working graveyard without a day off, or firefighter who's been battling a blaze for several hours.  We aren't even talking a farm working picking produce in the hot sun or a waitress working the dinner rush.  We are talking about politicians working from home.  I mean seriously - they don't even have to wear pants to work. I know, because most days I d...

The GOP Clown Show on Monday

Image
Its been amazingly quiet and calm on the Democratic side in local politics. Admittedly that could be a function of the fact that we haven't all been in the same room with one another since the start of the pandemic and meetings have been via zoom - but normally all the dram and infighting is on the Democratic Party side.  Other than the Democratic Party SDEC Committee man going on a cursing tirade during a meeting with a bunch of older women - about a woman to top it off - its been pretty boring in the huddle of Team Blue.  But the Republican Party here in El Paso has been an absolute shit show since Chairman-former chairman-now Chairman again (?) Seeberger took office. He's been controversial from day one because he sort of dropped into the El Paso GOP seemingly out of nowhere when he pretty much got chased out of Doña Ana County. And then he suddenly decided he wanted to run for congress.  That bothered a lot of long-time Republicans who have been involved in the EP GOP...

Seeberger Quits GOP Part 2

Image
Multiple sources within the GOP gave me the lowdown on why there was such an abrupt departure of El Paso County Republican Party Chairman Rick Seeberger.  Apparently at the last meeting of the EP GOP County Executive Meeting, which is usually referred to as the Precinct Chairs' Meeting, there was an altercation. Well, at most GOP Precinct Chair meetings since Seeberger has been elected there have been altercations.  The GOP went from mostly a social outlet for seniors on the westside to a complete shit show that is live streamed almost every meeting. And he usually has a merry band of weirdos that he has attracted as his acolytes that seem to fall in and out of favor with him.  Remember that "Oath Keeper" guy Chris Yost? He's the broke dick (precise military term) that likes going to stores to defy mask rules to make himself feel like he's smart and then he actually live streams himself being an asshole. Well he was the Sergeant-At-Arms for a while and yes, he wen...

Guest Post: Unity

Image
By: Rick Rubio President Joe Biden called for unity above all else in his inaugural address to the country and the world on January 20, 2021. I agree with him that unity should be our primary goal if we stand any chance of moving forward together as a nation, but after he delivered that address, I immediately saw what the most ardent of Trump supporters believe he meant. They believe that, in the name of unity, I should acknowledge that Donald Trump never really got his day in court and that, although Joe Biden was inaugurated as our 46th President, I should somehow accept that his presidency isn’t fully legitimate because questions remain. They believe that, in the name of unity, I should somehow sweep the January 6th insurrection under the rug and just chalk it up to the frustrations of people who truly felt disenfranchised. And despite the fact that Donald Trump was impeached as a result of his role in promulgating the disinformation that led to that insurrection, they believe that,...
