El Paso Politics

I have to give credit where credit is due. Last week I wrote about how council was failing the community by not pushing enforcement of the COVID-19 rules for bars.  Several bars decided to re-open during the pandemic (bars are currently prohibited from opening) as restaurants in order to start getting revenue going. Obviously some just became a restaurant so that they could open as a bar again and weren't taking the rules seriously.Around the same time, we saw aspike in virus cases in El Paso. It was very obviously causing a threat to public health because you had some bars that were essentially operating as business as usual. No social distancing, no masks, full capacity, people sitting at bars, no one ordering food, etc.  Meanwhile, there were bars and grills that were trying to be responsible business owners and members of the community doing everything they could to comply with the rules. And what you had was an unlevel playing field between the unscrupulous establishments...

I don't know why TC likes to pick fights with me, it never works out in her favor. But y'all know me...I love a good fight.  Caballero is actually the REASON I started blogging. When I first moved here and I saw the clown show desmadre she used to create at city council meetings and then as a candidate - I just couldn't stand it.  Sure, she clearly has some daddy issues and her dad probably had a lot of it coming. But she used to berate the guy during council meetings and those meetings, paid for by taxpayers, aren't the place to hash out family squabbles. Thats what awkward Thanksgiving meals are for.  But I also couldn't stand her conduct as a candidate. Theresa Caballero is really pissed that her sister Jennifer lost her kids in the divorce. So the duo have been trashing everyone remotely connected to the case all over social media.  I have no idea why a court felt that the kids were better off with their dad than with their mom, but thats not for me to decide. We, as a society should stop complaining about having so many absent fathers, and then complain the the occasional dad actually wins in court. And its occasional because we have a judicial system that inherently favors mothers when it comes to custody disputes.  So Theresa and Jennifer Caballero are your typical school yard bullies. You know the type and they've had that reputation for years, long before I came along. So now they are going after Lyda Ness Garcia, even making a play on words with her name. And of course, its all personally life bullshit.  But like most bullies, they cry foul when you put the microscope on them. And seriously, don't we all have pers...

Everybody relax...I took a break from blogging for awhile, but now I’m back.  And to usher in more commentary from my blog, I can think of nothing better to discuss than the failure of city leaders to deal with COVID-19.  We are facing more cases than we ever have before. We have an unprecedented spike in cases. Our hospitals are teetering at capacity for ICU beds. Our healthcare system is at the breaking point.  And most of our city leadership is failing us right now.  Republican leaders have been pushing for reopening of the economy from the get-go. Simple and basic things like wearing a mask have become politicized by conservatives as though its some sort of battle cry for their various conspiracy theories.  I’ll admit, I have a lot of friends that I didn’t know were total idiots until the ‘Rona happened. There's a video floating around on Facebook right now about showing Judge Laura Strathmann removing a sign of her opponent from a property.  Maybe its because I'm used to far worse things happening with signs in the Lower Valley in basically every campaign, even more so in this campaign season, that it is just not a big deal to me.  Except for one thing... It was totally a set up. I mean how dumb do you have to be to not see that.  Turns out there's a couple versions of that video floating around - one that actually turned down the audio and swapped it out for more dramatic audio.  I have the original video that was posted and my own question is - how much of this clearly planned set-up did Marlene Gonzalez know about? Is the guy following her around getting paid to do that, or is it just some weird obsession? Seriously, that campaign is crazy town so its a legit question - is he being paid or just following around a judge for the weird fun of it? Also...uh...what th...

It looks like there is now the political courage in El Paso to change the name of a school named after a treasonous confederate general that had far more Americans killed than Osama Bin Ladin.  Long over due, but EPISD is got it done - and its something pushed by a half-Latino, half-Palestinian trustee.  Gotta love El Paso.  But we still have a road bearing Robert E. Lee's name - in a community famous for having the first all-African American basketball team win a national championship.  Obviously renaming a street is normally a more difficult and more complicated affair than changing the name of a school. But in this case, its really not that difficult at all. Or is it?
