El Paso Politics

Its been amazingly quiet and calm on the Democratic side in local politics. Admittedly that could be a function of the fact that we haven't all been in the same room with one another since the start of the pandemic and meetings have been via zoom - but normally all the dram and infighting is on the Democratic Party side.  Other than the Democratic Party SDEC Committee man going on a cursing tirade during a meeting with a bunch of older women - about a woman to top it off - its been pretty boring in the huddle of Team Blue.  But the Republican Party here in El Paso has been an absolute shit show since Chairman-former chairman-now Chairman again (?) Seeberger took office. He's been controversial from day one because he sort of dropped into the El Paso GOP seemingly out of nowhere when he pretty much got chased out of Doña Ana County. And then he suddenly decided he wanted to run for congress.  That bothered a lot of long-time Republicans who have been involved in the EP GOP...

Multiple sources within the GOP gave me the lowdown on why there was such an abrupt departure of El Paso County Republican Party Chairman Rick Seeberger.  Apparently at the last meeting of the EP GOP County Executive Meeting, which is usually referred to as the Precinct Chairs' Meeting, there was an altercation. Well, at most GOP Precinct Chair meetings since Seeberger has been elected there have been altercations.  The GOP went from mostly a social outlet for seniors on the westside to a complete shit show that is live streamed almost every meeting. And he usually has a merry band of weirdos that he has attracted as his acolytes that seem to fall in and out of favor with him.  Remember that "Oath Keeper" guy Chris Yost? By: Rick Rubio President Joe Biden called for unity above all else in his inaugural address to the country and the world on January 20, 2021. I agree with him that unity should be our primary goal if we stand any chance of moving forward together as a nation, but after he delivered that address, I immediately saw what the most ardent of Trump supporters believe he meant. Controversial El Paso GOP Chairman Rick Seeberger who has been dogged by financial issues for years just suddenly gave up today. Click this link to read the email announcement . I don't know if it was he couldn't rationalize in his head that it was over and Trump really didn't win - or if he is just a born loser that is prone to giving up because things aren't easy or that the big bad mean senior citizens that make up most of the GOP party loyalists were just too mean to him.  In a whiny email he sent out to the GOP today he talked about why he ran and then that the El Paso GOP was at a Y in the road.  SIDEBAR: What is it with Republicans and the Village People anyway? Elections are over and in addition to council having to deal with the pandemic, they have another problem on their hands that normally would get a lot of attention.  If you recall, there was a judicial seat up for the municipal courts on the ballot. The seat was won by Lillian Blancas, who defeated the incumbent judge that was appointed to fill the seat and another candidate. She was in a run-off with Enrique Holguin after earning about 40% of the vote in the general election. Unfortunately - she lost her battle with COVID-19 before election day, but still won the election despite not campaigning during the run-off due to her battle with the virus.  That puts city council in a really awkward position because now they have to choose someone to fill the seat for the remainder of the term - which is the entire term.  I know, its a terrible situation because there are some complications. You know as you watch the footage of the coup attempt of last week there are parts of it that are pretty laughable and pathetic. When it started it looked like a redneck comicon complete with face paint, buffalo heads, Trump capes, and racism.  Lots and lots of racism.  And then things turned ugly - and they turned ugly fast. To the point now that all the people that breeched the capitol building in their stupid little racism costumes and mugging for the cameras are now realizing why their grandparents wore white hoods. Mixed in the honky Halloween party was several bands of paramilitary groups in tactical gear, equipped with restraints, clearly having the intent to take hostages. As you know there was an attempted coup late last week in our nation’s capitol that saw a lot of weirdos playing dress-up, white supremacists, and paramilitary groups dressed in tactical gear.  One police officer was killed, a few participants also died including one guy who reports are he Cheddar Bob’d himself with a taser causing a fatal heart attack. In the days following the Trump Riot law enforcement has been looking for the seditionists that breeched and occupied the capitol building.  Well if the FBI is interested, local right-wing extremist Anthony Aguero appears to be bragging about having participated in the breech.  Aguero occasionally tries to gain access to certain events by posing as a “journalist”, but he is not a trained journalist and typically does crowd-funding to pay for his gear and trips.  Aguero was a participant in the event, not an observer.
