You Don’t Belong Here: A Public Service Announcement for Marlene Gonzalez
Let’s go ahead and clear this up before it turns into one of those El Paso political urban legends that somehow ends up with a UFO sighting and a chupacabra cameo.
There’s a rumor floating around that I told Judge Marlene Gonzalez she was at the wrong party’s convention when she showed up to the Democratic Convention last weekend.
And I’ve been getting calls. Texts. Messages. Probably a carrier pigeon en route as we speak.
“Hey bro… did you really say that?”
So let me address this the only way I know how.
Yeah.
You're damn right I did.
With my whole chest. No subtitles needed.
Now, before anyone clutches their pearls so hard they sprain a wrist, let’s talk about why.
This isn’t about being rude. This isn’t about being dramatic. This is about reality. And reality doesn’t care about your feelings, your title, or how many people you’ve got around you pretending everything is fine.
We’re talking about a sitting judge who, according to filings from the legal arm of the Catholic Church, has been so “cruel” to unaccompanied minors that they felt the need to step in and ask that she be recused from those cases.
Let me repeat that in case it didn’t land the first time.
The Catholic Church. Said someone was too harsh on kids.
That’s not exactly a group known for throwing around that kind of accusation lightly.
And somehow, we’re supposed to pretend that’s just normal? That’s just “one of those things”? Nah. Miss me with that.
Because last I checked, the Democratic Party platform isn’t ambiguous about immigration. It’s not a “we’ll circle back” situation. It’s pretty damn clear: treat people with dignity, especially vulnerable populations like unaccompanied minors.
That’s not a side issue. That’s not optional. That’s core identity stuff.
So when someone shows up to a Democratic Convention, wearing the label but not living the values, yeah… it raises some eyebrows. And in my case, it raised my voice.
Because here’s the uncomfortable truth nobody wants to say out loud:
If your views on immigration line up more closely with Donald Trump than they do with the El Paso Democratic base, then what exactly are we doing here?
This isn’t complicated math.
And look, she has every right to believe whatever she wants. This is America. You want to take a hardline stance on immigration? Go for it.
But don’t show up to a space built around a completely different set of values and expect nobody to notice. That’s like walking into a carne asada with a tofu burger and acting confused when people start asking questions.
At some point, you’ve got to be honest about where you stand.
Because right now, what we’re seeing is a whole lot of political cosplay.
And I don’t know who needs to hear this, but just because you show up to the Democratic Convention doesn’t make you a Democrat any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.
So yeah, when she showed up, I said what needed to be said.
Not because it was easy. Not because it was polite.
Because it was true.
And if that makes people uncomfortable, good.
It should.
Because the real problem isn’t that I said it.
The real problem is that it needed to be said at all.
