The Bar Poll
Turns out the local bar is pretty much dominated by lawyers from the big civil law firms. Winning the El Paso Bar poll is like being on the cover of Madden. If you don't get that reference, you don't watch enough ESPN and are probably absolutely no fun to drink with. You probably "don't watch television" and if you do, its probably BritBox.
Anywho, for those of you that don't get the reference, the El Paso Bar Association isn't known for they ability to pick winners in judicial elections. Why? Because they are a bunch of lawyers and no one knows less about winning judicial elections than lawyers.
Shhhhh, don't tell them. They have no idea that the courthouse and the Bar don't win elections. It'll be like telling a 5 year old there's no such thing as Santa Claus.
Don't be that guy.
But, there are a few things that are notable about the Bar Poll that I think deserve a little attention.
The race for County Court of Law #3 is between three candidates. Jorge Rivas, Melissa Baeza, and Monica Perez. Apparently Monica Perez added "Lupita" to her name on the ballot, although no one in the courthouse has ever heard her use that name.
Memmur a while back when I said that there was a candidate that was at a Democratic Party event and she made it a point to speak to everyone at a table except a vato with a few tats wearing a tanda and so she ignored him?
That was Monica "Lupita" Perez.
Turns out, she's actually the President-Elect of the El Paso Bar Association. You'd figure she'd run away with the Bar Poll since she has home field advantage.
And.
She.
Lost.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously....if you're the President-Elect of the local bar and you can't even inspire enough trust from them to win their poll - you're in big trouble.
And I think I figure out why. Homegirl is a big time name-dropper. She can't stop talking about all the big shots that allegedly support her. All the upper-crusters from the country club events she posts about on social media...all the big super-duper law firms that allegedly support her. Hell, I've only seen her speak a few times and every. single. time. she invokes the name of Enrique Moreno.
Seriously, she's that tacky.
Oh, she doesn't stop there...at the Westside Democrats endorsement she even invoked the name of Hillary Clinton herself!
Seriously its been a really long time since I've seen a candidate try so hard to invoke the ghost of Christmas past.
8th Court of Appeals
As if that weren't noteworthy enough, the Bar Association apparently decided to go with the person who is guaranteed not to win the election. They had two Latina lawyers, one a Georgetown grad and the other a Stanford grad - and then went with the white Republican? Seriously, which ever candidate wins the race on the Democratic side could do a line of coke off the skull of an alter server in the middle of mass on a Holy Day of Obligation and STILL beat the Republican in November.
**** Later today I'll do another post about the Westside Dems endorsement meeting.
