Molinar Leads D4 Candidates in Contributions.
I know, its annoying. I started with District 4 instead of District 2. But honestly, for many folks Nixon is such a train wreck - and the fact that he was connected to Mayte Gonzalez and what I view as the absolute dirtiest and anti-Mexican campaign I've ever seen in a judicial race, they were just the easiest starting point.
Speaking of Mayte and Marlene Gonzalez, I've got something important to share soon, just been a little busy, but I'll get to it.
As a result I will just finish off the rest of the financials of the remaining District 4 candidates. And by remaining, I mean the ones that actually have a chance to make a run-off.
I'll go in the order that they are listed on the city website.
Before I go any further - there are a whole lot of candidates whose math skills are questionable. Because very few of them actually add up. But hey, its city council...so of course it doesn't add up....
This could be called the Nickname Race. Sissy is Dorothy Byrd's nickname, Morgan put "Doctor" under nickname, which honestly would be the douchiest in this race if it weren't for Molinar going by "Chief". God I love District 4 races...they NEVER disappoint.
Sissy Byrd raised $4205, spent $2744.09, and has $0 left in her account. The most notable contributions to her campaign were from Democratic Party regulars. Byrd is the Party favorite because she's been really involved in the Party for many years so she's highly respected within the Party. Interestingly she got an in-kind contribution from Commissioner Robinson. He and incumbent Sam Morgan have old beef.
Incumbent City Rep Sam Morgan raised $8,481 and spent $7590.82. He has $9625.17 left in the bank. These numbers make no sense and my head already hurts. The most notable name on his finance report...a little bit of a blast from the past - Dori Fenenbock!
So now I get it. I was wondering why Morgan was so close to the GOP candidates and this check from Fenenbock makes all the more sense now. He has beef with Congresswoman Escobar because she was one of the people who signed a letter calling on his resignation because he's facing a domestic violence charge.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that one of the other signers of that letter was also City Rep Cassandra Hernandez. Her fiancé was also arrested for domestic violence. She didn't whisper a single thing about it when it was him.
Anywho, that all makes sense now.
The fact that Morgan's fundraising was so modest is pretty concerning for an incumbent facing multiple candidates.
Joe Molinar raised $14,393.86, spent $10,383.67 and has $3,092.04 left in his account. Molinar raised the most in this race but personally I think he's spent his money pretty poorly. with about $6k being spent on billboards. Why give up your fundraising edge by blowing it on the worlds largest yard signs? The noteworthy contributions on his report are $2000 from the police officers union, meaning he's tied to Jeremy Jordan.
But lets be real...Joe Molinar is probably going to be in the run-off. The question is, who's going to join him?
Wesley Lawrence raised $2924.66, spent $1676.43 and has more money left in his campaign than he raised apparently - $3014.06. Wesley's most noteworthy contribution is $100 from Eddie Holguin from Sun Circle Strategic Group - the recipient of thousands of dollars from the El Paso County Democratic Party while Holguin's wife was chair of the Democratic Party. Lawrence was a big supporter of Holguin - so its a little surprising that the donation was so small. Lawrence voted Republican until the last election cycle and says he's no longer a Trump supporter but he's listed as a pro-life Democrat and says he's pro-choice when asked about his stand on reproductive rights.
