Westside Anti-Maskers, EPISD & HS Sports

Theres been a group of mostly Republican white parents on the westside that organized on Facebook to push EPISD into sending kids back into classrooms. They pretty much corner trustees and hammer them about giving their families the "option" to return to class.

They did so and predictably cases went up. Students have caught it, a staff member at Coronado High School, and I hear a couple of other schools as well that have it and EPISD canceled sports with other school districts. All because some Karen's wanted to have the "option" to return and parents across El Paso wanna see mijo and mija place because its their senior year, etc.

But the biggest problem with that situation is that EPISD hasn't given TEACHERS the option about returning to in-classroom education.

You realize that the push for returning to class and probably sports as well is eventually going to lead to someone dying because of the virus, right?

Seriously how selfish is it to be okay with someone, a teacher, janitor, bus driver, paraprofessional, cafeteria worker, coach, student, parent or grandparent dying from the virus because its inconvenient to have the kids at home and you want your kids in sports?

I have lost track of how many parents I have seen get mad because some pinche app isn't working so that they can see their kid playing their sport.

There. Shouldn't. Be. Sports.

At least not until we have an actual hold on the pandemic.

Professional sports just got started and have you seen how many times they stumbled? And its what they do for a living. The NBA had their entire league in a bubble to prevent the spread. Google any major sport and you'll see about infections on the various teams. You think that magically kids from Franklin and Coronado aren't going to give it to kids from El Dorado and Montwood?

Even if a kid gets it, and doesn't have symptoms - they go home to their families. You know how this story ends.

So I don't understand why high school sports is even going on right now. I can't think of a single sport over than golf and tennis, where you can realistically socially distance. All your major sports, football, basketball, baseball, cheer, volleyball, etc...all of those are close contact sports.

And then you want in-school instruction where someone is inevitably going to die from an infection they got from school. Its not IF its going to happen, its who, how many, and when?

So we want to give parents options, but teachers and the rest of school staff don't get an option? How does this make any sense?

Now that the district has paused things - it'll be interesting to see what the other districts do.

What'll be more investing to see is how EPISD is going to handle the fact that their Superintendent - you know, the one who is supposed to be keeping every one safe - is at a volleyball game for his kid, without a mask. And he's the one who banned parents from attending games.

Do as I say, not as I do. EPISD has to send a message to the public that no one is above the rules when it comes to public health.
