El Paso GOP in Chaos Under Seeberger
I frequently have chronicled the fights and altercations of the El Paso Democratic Party over the years, so its only fair to do the same with the GOP. Plus, things are quite over on the Democratic side these days since there is now a chair that isn't funneling party money to her own spouse like the last one.
The emergency meeting of precinct chairs was called by embattled GOP Chair Rick Seeberger because of a contribution that was made to the Republican Party's Congressional Sacrificial Lamb, Irene Armendariz-Jackson.
Here are the details I have been able to sort out based on conversations with a few witnesses.
Seeberger took issue with a check that was given to Irene Armendariz-Jackson on behalf of the Republican Party in the amount of $5,000. I guess it was originally going to be $1,000 but I gather it was increased shortly before the change in regimes.
Although it seems that Seeberger was more upset that the party didn't give him any money when he lost to Escobar a couple of years ago. Seeberger has a bunch of financial issues in his past that caused a lot of folks in the El Paso Republican Party to think twice about supporting his candidacy.
So Seeberger called the meeting to ask for the money back and then raise some issue of stolen Republican artifacts from Party HQ. Wait, what? Yep, you read that right. The Chair of the El Paso GOP wanted the duly elected nominee to be the next ass Escobar kicks in November, Irene Armendariz Jackson, to RETURN A CHECK FROM THE PARTY.
That is just bonkers.
Even for the GOP.
Even during the Trump Administration.
Even in 2020.
I think Seeberger alleged that it was an improper donation. IAJ was pretty upset about that. A shouting match ensued and at one point, according to multiple sources Seeberger attempted to remove the congressional nominee from the meeting and even went so far as to threaten to call the police for criminal trespassing.
The El Paso GOP chair threatened to call the cops on the CONGRESSIONAL NOMINEE of the GOP, for criminal trespassing!
Later, according to multiple sources, Seeberger alleged that former Chairman Adolfo Telles had stolen several items from the El Paso GOP Headquarters.
I should pull over real quick and explain that there is a faction war going on in the El Paso GOP right now and many of the "old guard" Republicans are none to happy with how Trumpian Seeberger is. Braggadocios, loud, and apparently has a casual relationship with the truth...
Anywho, enter long time Republican Party loyalist Bobby Peña. For those of you that are familiar with the El Paso Democratic Party and unfamiliar with the El Paso GOP, Bobby Peña is the George Ybarra of the El Paso GOP. He's a quite, behind-the-scenes guy who is loyal to the party and does a lot of the day-to-day stuff for the party. He's very likable and the party would really miss having a guy like him around.
Well Bobby took issue with Seeberger allegations, produced a letter from Texas GOP Chairman Allen West stating there was no issue with the contribution.
More of scrum...
And then witnesses say Seeberger instructed the Sergeant-At-Arms to remove Bobby Peña from the meeting!
Bobby Freakin' Peña! My dear departed Republican Friend Becky Hermosillo dubbed me the Arch Duke of Democrats at a meeting once, a tittle I wore with pride. Well, I'm the Arch Duke of Democrats and even I know that Bobby Peña has done more for the El Paso Republican Party in one day than Seeberger and his new faction have done in their lives. So it was a pretty big surprise to hear that go down.
Oh, and did I mention that Bobby is an older guy, I'm gonna guess in his 70's...and the Sergeant-At-Arms in the GOP is one of those open carry guys? Yeah, real class El Paso Republican Party...remove a loyal party regular in his 70's with a guy carrying a gun.
Word around the ol' elephant tusks is that the memorabilia that was recently removed from GOP headquarters was stuff that was on loan to the party from local Republicans. A lot of them wanted their stuff back when they realized Seeberger was going to be running the store and wanted their stuff back.
Its about 3 weeks to early voting and the party is imploding like this? Its not like the Republicans were going to win any elections this cycle, but under Seeberger's leadership they may actually under perform, which is saying a lot for the El Paso Republican Party.
Seeberger whined about not having the local Republican Party back him up when he ran for congress. But Seeberger's actions to undermine his Party's congressional nominee is the worst thing I've seen a party chair do to a congressional nominee. And certainly far worse than what anyone ever did to him.
Oh man, I almost feel bad for the beat-down we are going to give them all in November - but with Seeberger at the helm...it makes me wanna run up the score!
