The Republican Primaries
I haven't written much lately. And yes, there is LOTS to talk about - which I'll get to in due time.
But ya know, I really haven't given much attention to our friends on the other side of the aisle, the sacrificial lambs of El Paso politics, the Republican Party.
Believe it or not, things are pretty interesting over there this time around.
Two of the several Republican candidates for the congressional seat that are fighting for the right to get beat-down in November are really spending a lot of time fixating on one another - Sam Williams and Anthony Aguero.
Their fight with one another is reflective of the other big fight in the GOP right now, the faction war for their Chairmanship.
Hell they even have had a fight over dueling “official” debates - which were nothing more than Seeberger’s click running their own forum.
In one corner you have Adolfo Telles, owner of the iconic Rosa's Cantina. He's the establishment Republican wing. Probably because he's Latino, Telles knows that they gotta reach out to Latinos to have any chance of slowing down the decline of the El Paso GOP.
Aguero, the world's biggest Tio Taco, is from the anti-establishment wing of the party that is much more anti-immigrant / borderline racist. That wing, though Aguero probably thinks its him, and Max Grossman probably thinks its him, is led by controversial former congressional candidate Rick Seeberger.
You ever hear the term "like taking candy from a baby"? Well that kind of applies to Rick Seeberger. He was involved in a fundraising scandal in which some PTA's got screwed over.
So Seeberger is trying to be the Republican Party Boss and wrestle that title away from the current chair, Adolfo Telles. This little rift stems from the fact that Seeberger doesn't think Telles and the local party were behind him enough the last time he ran when Escobar cleaned his clock. He also thought that the election was rigged.
He has lots of conspiracy theories.
Sources in the GOP indicated back then that all Telles did is tell him that his background was problematic and that anyone with the financial history he has would have a hard time convincing folks he's fiscally responsible.
As we all know, Republicans don't do well with facts that run counter to their narrative. So the fact that Telles was right is what set off Seeberger on this quest to get his seat back.
But ol' Seeberger has a big problem on his hands that I will outline in a post tomorrow. Trust me, you aren't going to want to miss it because self-inflicted wounds are the funniest in politics.
Anywho, neither Sam Williams and Anthony Aguero will ever be members of congress. The math just isn't there and like I said, its not impossible that neither of them make it out of the primary. But they are really focused on one another.
Sam Williams records a lot of conversations and so you should hear his sound cloud. Its legendary. There's so much machismo and posturing between two campaigns that aren't really serious congressional races. And despite the fact that neither of them are credible candidates, its hilarious to hear Sam Williams completely own Aguero's camp every time they talk.
Here's a link to the sound cloud account.
The Republicans have more candidates in this cycle than probably ever before. They aren't going to win any of them, but they are eat least trying to be present in the election cycle now.
The GOP is still under the mistaken belief that El Pasoans are Democrats because of straight-ticket voting. They are obviously going to be in for a shock in November, but their calculation is that people won't go all they way down the ballot to vote and they might be able to be competitive in a race or two.
Again, they are wrong. But it is notable that under their current leadership the Republicans have fielded their largest slate of candidates.
Personally, I'd like to see Seeberger win. I've had to debate Chairman Telles on camera before. I'd have so much more fun with Seeberger and he's so much easier to get under his skin, so I'll be licking my chops if the GOP elects that guy!
Also, with a financial record like Seeberger's, it wouldn't shock me if the GOP went bankrupt pretty quickly - which is a-okay with me. Vote Seeberger!
Also, don't forget my piece about Seeberger and a self-inflicted political wound coming tomorrow!
