Dykes on the Death Penalty

Karen Dykes is the top fundraiser on the first financial reports of the candidates for District Attorney. She donated $7,000 to herself, which put her over the top by $400. Had she lent herself that money should could pay herself back, but she listed it as a contribution instead of a loan.

She seems like a nice lady and she's very well spoken. I'm sure she's an adequate attorney. But frankly, I just can't take her seriously.

Here's why I can't take her seriously. The next District Attorney is going to prosecute the Walmart Shooter and the guy who killed Deputy Herrera. Two very important cases for our community. We are hiring the next chief prosecutor of crimes to help keep our community safe.

Karen Dykes, Yvonne Rosales, and Roger Montoya are all defense attorneys. They have made their living getting people off the hook for crimes. The whole purpose of being a defense lawyer is to make sure your client isn't convicted or to get the least harsh punishment possible.

If we were hiring for the Public Defender's Office, I would be happy with the experience of these candidates. But lets be real - the Theresa Caballero philosophy of being the DA doesn't keep our community safe. And that is my problem with Dykes, Rosales, and Roger Montoya...all I hear from them is rhetoric that sounds like Theresa Caballero...they all pretty much talk like defense lawyers.

This election is about hiring the next prosecutor. This is a serious job and calls for a serious prosecutor. We need someone who is going to take the job seriously and win these two very important cases for our community.

I heard this answer from Karen Dykes about the death penalty and I immediately knew she's not a serious candidate.

And its not even the fact that she can't see to separate church and state.

Its the actual logic behind the answer. If you're going to make the argument that she does - and I'm not exaggerating, watch the video for yourself - that if it wasn't for the death penalty, we wouldn't have Jesus, then there is no reason I should vote for her.

Seriously, if you're going to be using Jesus as your example, then its an example of why you shouldn't have the death penalty. He was a wrongly-accused person of color who was put to death by the state. No trial, no due process. As the Bible tells it, it was mob rule. Its the exact opposite of the argument she was trying to make.

I just can[t take her seriously as a candidate.
