Clarifying Cassandra...

Okay so there's a fair amount of confusion going on from my conversations with folks about City Rep Cassandra Hernandez and Monday's meeting to set a special election to replace her on council.

First - I'll be the last to defend Dee Margo, but the Mayor really doesn't have a say in this. Once Cassandra made her intentions of running for mayor public through social media - which its sole purpose is to make things public - the mayor and council pretty much have their hands tied. The law kicks in and its clear - that is an automatic resignation.

Obviously someone screwed up. Knowing Hernandez, the last thing she'll do is take personal responsibility for the screw up. I'm sure she'll blame it on someone else.

You know, the Shaggy Defense.

"It wasn't me."

But it doesn't matter - that facebook posting sealed her fate.

Obviously she wanted to be able to keep her salary and her position on council so that she could rail against the meeting and politicize every decision council makes in terms of the mayoral election.

Now she's going to lose that income and that ability to use council as her campaign tool to run for office.

You may wonder why council is moving so swiftly to replace her now and the reason is simple. And quite frankly, Hernandez should HOPE they resolve it on Monday. They are moving to replace her because they want it on the November ballot so that it minimizes the cost to El Paso tax payers because there is already an election scheduled - and if they can't get it on the November ballot, it is going to be expensive to the city tax payers to run a separate special election - just to replace an ambitious first term City Rep with absolutely ZERO accomplishments - other than being a Latina and BLOCKING an easy street name change from a racist Civil War general to a Latina Civil Rights hero.

She loses all credibility on Vote-For-Me-Because-I'm-a-Latinx-Woman after that one.

The last thing I want to clarify is that she looks more like the hard-hat picture than that photoshopped picture she's going to use for her campaign. Seriously, I haven't seen a campaign picture with that much editing done to it since Dora Oaxaca, Norma Chavez, and Theresa Caballero's campaign photos.

I kid.

Seriously the last thing I want to clarify is her voting. Someone commented on a previous post about this issue asking if she posted the intent to run for Mayor on Monday, wouldn't her resignation be effective that date and what would it mean for votes taken after her resignation.

That was a good question. Here's the answer. Its called the Texas Hold Over Clause. No, its not a fat guy in a red suit with a cowboy hat, spurs, and a horse.

It means that here in Texas, when you resign or are removed from office, you hold the office until there is a replacement. So all her votes are 100% legit until such time as she is replaced.
