More Candidate Chatter...

Well you're going to hear a lot of chatter about things that may or may not pan out over the next few months in terms of candidates, so expect a few of these types of posts.

Former Judge Gonzalo Garcia is rumored to be thinking about running for District Attorney. That is actually an old rumor that resurfaced once State Rep Joe Moody made it clear on Thursday that he is running for reelection rather than running for DA.

A union friend of mine had jury duty near the end of Gonzalez Garcia's last term on the bench. Judge Garcia is affectionately known as "GG". She called me after the jury selection was over because she couldn't believe what she'd heard GG say. She indicated that he flat out told all the jury pool that he was ending his time on the bench but that you'd see his name on a ballot again soon.

I think I wrote about that a while back but its interesting because if you recall, the alleged plan was that GG was going to run for another judicial seat but he didn't know that you had to file for that seat in Austin and he tried to file on the same day as the filing deadline. His niece turned around and filed for his seat the same day. Except he didn't realize he couldn't make it to Austin before 5:00pm local time to file.

So his niece is now on his bench. To my knowledge there has never been a District Attorney in El Paso that was related to a judge, so it is unclear what kind of ramifications that would have if GG were elected to the seat. One thing is for sure, GG would be by far the oldest candidate in the field if he chose to run, which would be an interesting contrast to James Montoya who is in his late 20's and Yvonne Rosales who is in her mid 40's.

There are at least two other candidates that I hear are considering jumping into the race for DA in addition to GG (one is a female judge), which must really bother Rosales. She has been saying that the reason Esparza retired was because she was running again. If she scared Esparza, which I don't think anyone actually believes she did, she apparently isn't scaring anyone else off.

But wait til you see my blog later today about a candidate that appears to have been put up as a patsy for another DA candidate. Check back later today for that one...

Boxer Making a Bid?

A source who was at a border wall event recently indicated that they heard former boxer David Rodriguez was talking about running for congress as a Republican. Not sure how serious he actually is about doing so, but he would be running in the same lane as Pedro Aguero.

The GOP is rumored to have a female candidate considering a bid as well a business-class candidate considering a run. So you may actually see a contested primary on the Republican side that actually might include multiple candidates.

Then you'll have the candidates with even less of a chance of winning that are Trump-loving Republicans that will run as independents because they can't win the GOP primary.

Rodriguez's candidacy would be interesting because he has more name ID than Aguero by a substantial amount, but he's really thin on policy knowledge and has no real experience with policy. His claim to fame is that he was a boxer, allegedly used a racial slur in an incident in which he was seriously injured, and he's a big time Trump supporter - while simultaneously (read hypocritically) being involved in anti-bullying campaigns.

Well he was until Mickey Loweree suffered an embarrassing loss for reelection to her superintendent seat. Rodriguez was a vocal supporter of Loweree and was on her lit.

It didn't help her, which doesn't bode well for Rodriguez.

Like I said, I don't know how serious he is about the idea of running or if he is still considering it, but it would be entertaining at least.
