Sierra & Hicks Go Anti Labor/Anti Law Enforcement
I saw a mailer today that someone sent me that has be cracking up because it crystalizes just how terrible of a consultant Carlos Sierra is.
It was for his District 6 EPISD candidate for the Franklin area, Tom Hicks. Freddy Klayel-Avalos has Sun Circle Strategic Group. Former City Rep Eddie Holguin is a partner in that firm and he's made a career out of taking people from the Hicks' clan out to the woodshed.
Klayel-Avalos was just 25 votes shy of winning without a run-off so Sierra had his work cut out for him to begin with. Its a steep climb to try to come back from that kind of deficit.
But it is the tactic that he took that is surprisingly dumb. I mean we all know that Carlos Sierra is a Republican. That isn't breaking news. Hell I'm half-surprised he's not wearing a MAGA hat in this pic of the two of them at a fundraiser for Mickey Loweree earlier this cycle.
Sierra mistakenly believes that in order for Hicks to win, that the path to victory is going full Republican in the run-off.
Here's a look at the mailer and I want to draw your attention to a couple of things about it - the most notable of which is that only Carlos Sierra would think being anti-Law Enforcement and anti-Teacher is a good way to get votes.
Let's start with the red arrow. Sierra has Hicks go after the fact that Klayel-Avalos is supported by unions. Who are the unions supporting Klayel-Avalos?
Law enforcement and teachers.
Hicks actually had the audacity to go after Klayel-Avalos because he's supported by teachers and law enforcement. Just chew on that for a while.
Oh, but it gets better.
Because on the other side of the mailer, Hicks talks about how his going to advocate for teachers.
So on one side of the same mailer his message is teachers are bad because as a union they are supporting his opponent. Then on the other side, he said he was going to represent teachers.
So which is it? Talk about being two-faced.
The red arrow on points to the two bullet points in Hicks' mailer that basically state that living in El Paso is a qualification. I don't know where the idea that living in El Paso became a qualification, but it isn't. As far as I know Klayel-Avalos was born and raised in El Paso and if I recall his speeches correctly, he went to elementary, middle, and high school all in the Franklin feeder pattern. I don't know that Hicks has, which is yet another reason its such a dumb thing to bring up.
Except for the fact that he's trying to get by on his family name. Which is fine, but really poorly executed.
The last thing I want to talk about is the highlighted word. Remember just the other day I wrote about how this election was going to be about which candidates are going to hold the superintendent accountable? Well one of the things I said was that Hicks was not going to hold the super accountable and is never critical of the super.
Well obviously this mailer was already in print but boy did he stick his foot in his mouth. He actually states he's going to represent "...administration...".
You don't elect trustees to represent administration. You elect trustees to hold administration accountable.
Tom Hicks' own mailer explains why he's a bad choice for voters. Being anti-labor, anti-law enforcement, and anti-teacher is a big mistake on Hicks' part, but everything you need to know about him if you are a voter on the Westside.
