European Vacations & Other Bonehead Campaign Stuff
Niña Piña is a candidate on the eastside for an El Paso Community College Board of Trustees seat.
Those are important seats but they have a really hard time with credibility in the community because, well its a school board seat for community college. People just don't know that is a thing.
Well she apparently is SOOOOO committed to earning your vote, that she decided to take a European vacation during the run up to Early Voting and the first part of Early Voting. Nothing sends a clearer message that you don't give a damn about the office you're running for than going out of town in the middle of a campaign.
Going out of the country, that is leveling up!
Yep, that is how much she cares about being a trustee. Also, talk about being tone deaf about the community you're trying to represent...you're trying to get a seat on a board who's students are largely funding their collegiate investment through Pell grants and other financial aide, but you're off site seeing in Europe?
At a recent candidate forum for EPCC candidates, another candidate for a different seat on the EPCC Board, Carmen Graham, apparently had another blow up about voting Republican in the Trump primary again. I wasn't there, but attendees said it was worse than her recently comments about the matter at an Eastside Democrats Forum.
At that forum - in a room full of Democrats - she was asked about her voting history (she voted Republican in the 2016 primary - and her response was "I'll be a Democrat again when they stop killing babies." It was the most jaw-dropping answer to a question I've seen at forums this campaign season.
And for some reason that only the Almighty Herself can understand - BOTH of these candidates are supported by the sitting or recent EPCC Board Members. Which if you're a Democrat that was a recent or current member of the EPCC Board and you stand by that endorsement, you should stop calling yourself a Democrat or stop supporting her after those remarks.
Those would be the most boneheaded political moves if it wasn't for a city rep candidate out in San Elizario. Now as you may know, San Eli just finished a successful playoff run in soccer and it ended with the Eagles bringing home the state championship. Obviously that is the biggest deal in almost any Texas community and they came home to a nice warm welcome in San Eli.
Rather than celebrate the accomplishment of the students, Vanessa Rios Ogas and Lorenzo Leyva, who happen to be SISD candidate Josh Carter's slate of candidates in San Elizario, decided to take advantage of the students' state championship and make it about them.
As you can see in this photo, they are clearly campaigning on school grounds. But honestly, that isn't the point. Its an event to celebrate the accomplishments of students and you make it about your campaign?
Really?
I mean seriously, no one around them said, hey maybe this is a bad idea and people in the community are going to be bothered by the fact that we are using the fact that some students put in a lot of hard work and talent to make it through the rigors of a state championship tournament and we are using it to campaign for political office?
You're talking about small town politics in a close knit community. The city who relies a lot on tourism plays close attention to how it is portrayed to everyone else.
Oh hey speaking of San Eli paying close attention to how they are portrayed to everyone because of their image - this is how Rios - Ogas portrays herself to the world on social media.
The top one is currently her cover photo. I guess she really wants people to know she does hair. The second one is one of her old profile pictures.
Thats the person that wants to represent one of the oldest communities in Texas with one of the strongest backgrounds in military service.
From a policy perspective, what concerns me most about her is that she wants to eliminate the Marshal position in San Elizario. Anyone that wants to get rid of law enforcement in a town where a sheriff was just recently killed in the line of duty does NOT sound like they have the needs of their community as a priority.
