Who I'd Vote For
I don't do endorsements and they don't help anyone. Not only do they not help, no candidate would be stupid enough to want it anyway.
But I frequently am asked for details about a particular candidate or issue and often people ask me who/how I'm voting. Plus there are a lot of people who are voting that don't normally vote. Which means they are going to be all over the place and impossible to predict what they are going to do.
The Fire Fighter Issues
UNDECIDED - I'm a union guy, so I'm inclined to support them. But the drug test thing is simply ridiculous to me. I'll make up my mind today.
District 1
No dog in the fight because I don't live there. I've said it all along and no one took me serious, but I think it will be a run off between Peter Svarzbein and Al Weisenberger. Gallardo has been pretty unimpressive and so has Bonart's ground game. I expected more out of Gallardo's team. This becomes a contrast between the new and the old. With all the people coming to the polls who have never voted before I have to assume they are on the younger side and Peter will benefit.
This is easy for me. I'd vote for Svarzbein. Weisenberger has an entire law practice to shut down that will take months to accomplish.
District 5
Seriously all of you that vote for Cabrera (Arellano) need to have your freakin heads examined. Yes, I'm calling you stupid. Because only an idiot would vote for someone who has almost no working knowledge of policy or the machinations of government. She's El Paso's answer to Sarah Palin. I saw a news piece about her that featured her saying that Noe is basically furniture on city council. Well, as a former eastsider myself, I can tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. Noe has brought more to the eastside than any other rep that I can remember. The largest park in El Paso is just another example of his work. Cabrera is a religious zealot more concerned with taking selfies and waving the Israeli flag than almost anything else. We need a serious representative in that office, not just someone who repeats Jaime O. Perez platitudes. Her appearance at the meetings for the eastside regional park was a microcosm of her campaign. She begged for attention, made some ridiculous allegation about the park that exposed how little she knows about government, and had everyone looking at her with uncomfortable embarrassment.
Oh yeah, and she had immigrant women stand outside in the hot ass sun all day to panhandle for money while she lives the good life in a huge fancy home and a luxury car. Seriously, she's pointing at rich westsiders and the truth is, she's a rich eastsider.
District 6
I live in District 6. I'm voting for Ordaz. Mike Pickett just moved to El Paso. I'm glad he likes it here, but he doesn't know the community. He's never done anything for this community. He has ZERO service to the community. I say that as a veteran. Because his spin doctor Jaime O. Perez has been trying to say that its a slap in the face to veterans for the paper to say that he has no service to the community if he's a veteran.
Well guess what, the paper is right. He served in the Navy during peace time. Lets stop trying to make him out to be a Green Beret. Its an insult to veterans that actually served in combat arms. I served in the military and my last duty station was Fort Bliss. I don't think I'd classify my military service at Fort Bliss as community service to El Paso. Sure, I served my country, but its not expressly service to El Paso. Pickett didn't even serve here.
And Jaime O. Perez never served in the military either. So what the hell does he know about military service. If you never laced up a pair of boots and humped a ruck, you aren't in the brotherhood or sisterhood of military service. She's the type of engaged and studious leader the eastside and especially the valley, needs.
By contrast, all of Rep Ordaz's experience has been service to her community. She's tripled the number of Neighborhood Associations in the valley making grant funds available to communities that suffered from a lack of leadership under the previous city rep Eddie Holguin. She's held the line against crappy job providers getting big tax breaks.
Oh yeah, and she isn't a member of a militia, doesn't think El Paso is a suburb of Juarez, and doesn't equate immigrants with terrorists. So there's that too.
Plus, she keeps it real. Her campaign mailers are the some blue/blue-green color lay out as the box or bucket of manteca your mom probably has in her kitchen. She keeps it real.
District 8
Niland and Dagda has been an interesting race to follow because tactically Dagda is going everything right. He's gone negative from day one in an effort to define his opponent. He's capitalized on her weaknesses and made her lose her cool a time or two along the campaign trail.
He's block-walked a la madre too.
And he's extremely likable when he doesn't have that really strange hair guy following him around. No, not Ali Razavi. Another hair hipster douche.
But Dagda is still going to lose. And rightfully so.
He's in over his head. He got in a zinger about a hot dog stand in a debate. But lets be real. Dagda couldn't run a hot dog stand without asking Stephanie Townsend Allala what to do or how to work in the words "transparency" "affidavit" or "San chhhaa seen-to Plah-sah"
He's made this argument about turning the San Jacinto Plaza from a park into a park. Nothing underscores his lack of understanding than that line. If he thinks that is all that is happening there then that is all the reason you need to not vote for the guy.
He wears a suit that a size too big for him and it illustrates something about him unintentionally. He hasn't grown into his britches yet. Maybe down the road someday he can be viable candidate at something.
But that is a long road.
This is why having an opponent is a good thing. Niland is rough around the edges and this campaign gave her an opportunity to tighten up her game.
Niland's a fighter. I'd rather have a fighter who gets things done and steps on a few toes than someone who has to grow into the job.
I'd much rather have Niland run the hot dog stand than Dagda.
Final Note
If you bitch about your taxes but don't vote in the school board elections. You're an idiot and you should slap yourself for being an idiot. Its the largest part of your tax bill fool.
Speaking of school board races...I'm going to tell you all about campaign donations to candidates that no one else will in an upcoming post.
