The Bobby Kennedy Remark
Okay, I have been getting a lot of flack about the Bobby Kennedy remark. I don't mind getting criticism, hell I get it all the time.
But all the people that are pissed about the Bobby Kennedy remark are people that weren't there. There is nothing wrong with giving an honest assessment. O'Rourke was impressive last night. Deal with it. Just about anyone who was there probably made a similar assessment.
And another thing, why aren't you people pissed off at the Gandara's being called the Kennedy's? There is honestly no real comparison between the Gandara's and the Kennedy's other than they are wealthy political families that maintained political control over a given area. For the Kennedy's it was New England and they had the White House.
For the Gandara's it was Socorro, for a short time. O'Rourke was dynamic, bright, eloquent, and was able to inspire a level of excitement in a group of people I have never seen before in El Paso. The Gandara's don't do that.
In the past I have taken sides in a few races. That was a mistake. People started reading my blog because I tried to give an assessment of races and do so without coming from the perspective of a political camp. I was always an issues guy, not a personality guy.
Somewhere along the way I lost my way for a while and ended up taking sides. I'm going to do my best not to do that. That doesn't mean I won't have an opinion, it doesn't mean I won't have someone I am rooting for, and I will be certainly voting in elections. But I'm going to go back to issues and not be on a team.
No one is completely objective, so don't try to define me by what you want me to be or how you want me to write. But I'm going to try to do a better job of not taking sides and calling like I see them.
And that doesn't mean that if I think someone is bad for the office they are pursing that I am just going to be quiet about it, because that's not gonna happen.
Unless its a Democrat versus a Republican, at which point I won't make any bones about the fact that I will stand behind my values and therefore, don't expect objectivity when I'm dealing with those issues.
So for those of you that are upset about the Kennedy remark, get over it. Next time I might think differently. It was just one assessment of one event.
And speaking of that, I heard some people say last night, and saw some others post on their facebook today, words to the affect that they want change because they want El Paso to be better, or they want their lives to be better, or they want someone to do something about (fill in the blank).
Hate to break it to you, but one member of Congress, no matter who you are supporting, isn't going to be able to do that for you.
You want to make El Paso a better place? Then its up to you. Roll up your sleeves and do something about it. Get involved. Get off the sidelines.
Oh, and UTEP totally needs a new football coach. Its not wrong for us to want better. Its not being unappreciative of a coach. This town embraced him and gave him a second chance. We aren't wrong for wanting more.
Sorry for the sidebar.
