Holguin Ends Speculation About Re-Election
Politicos around town have been wondering all week long why Holguin hasn't filed for re-election. "Shit or get off the pot" as I mentioned previously. The El Paso Inc had a piece written about the fact that Holguin hasn't filed re-election papers yet despite having an opponent.
I have inquired with Holguin several times over the last week as to why he hadn't filed yet and he was undecided. He's a young guy and has young children. Young children want their dad around. The pull of family life is a strong factor, just ask any elected official. You spend a lot of time taking care of other people's problems and your family has to deal with your absence.
Plus you have to put up with a lot of people's crap, like the media, opponents, smart-ass know-it-all bloggers, and yes, pain in the ass constituents.
Well, Holguin has finally decided to make it official tonight.
He's going to run for re-election.
Holguin has one of the safest seats in town, which I'm reluctant to say given the fact that I used to frequently say Norma Chavez was "bullet-proof".
But in the case of Holguin, its true. He has a solid base and even Republicans like him. Which probably explains why so many of them tried to talk his opponent, Zulema Lazarin out of running against him.
Holguin should probably sail right in to re-election and along with Courtney Niland, will have pretty easy roads to victory. Neither of them appear to have viable threats.
For Holguin, re-election is a wise move. He is a young guy and has a political future ahead of him. Had he decided to not run for re-election, he would've taken a pretty big risk. First, he's pissed off a few people by not making a decision sooner. Had he decided not to run for re-election, there wouldn't have been time for anyone else in the district to react and he would've handed over the seat to someone who's values don't reflect the district and didn't even know she lived in the district in the first place.
His constituency would've been really upset about that. So would most politicos in town.
Sources tell me that Holguin has had his campaign materials ready to go to print, along with invitations to a campaign announcement, so the back and forth of whether or not he was going to run might have been a little gamesmanship on his part.
Who knows, maybe he wanted to give El Paso something to be in suspense about since UTEP lost the C-USA Championship and is playing in the NIT instead.
His opponent is a religious conservative, so I imagine she does a lot of praying. I'll bet she's done a little extra this weekend. Holguin spends a lot of time in church himself.
I think God's not taking sides in this one, which is bad news for Lazarin, because she really could've used the Almighty on her side, especially in the Valley.
