Hector H. Lopez's On-Air Tantrum

From The Lion Star Blog by Jaime Abeytia
Hector H. Lopez, who seems to have an endless supply of criticism for everyone and thing in El Paso, including saying that there are no leaders in El Paso, apparently can dish it out, but can't take it.

David K and Brownfield wrote some pieces on their blogs that were critical of Hector H. Lopez's election night coverage. I linked to Brownfield's post because I thought it was funny. During Hector's on-air bitch fest the other day, he said he liked it and thought it was funny too.

Which is why I can't understand why he dragged me in to his tirade. Who knows, maybe he was on his period.

What Hector H. Lopez doesn't understand is the concept of team. I'm a member of Team KHRO and on election night, when Chris Bailey was having a hard time with some technical issues over at the UNITY headquarters, I helped him out and made it possible for him to broadcast with Hector H. Lopez.

Know what else I did? I shared my election numbers with him. Chris Bailey gets it. He understands that in order to make anything happen, it takes a team effort and Bailey thanked me for helping him out.

Despite the fact that Norma Chavez was involved and she's not exactly my favorite person, I still pitched in. Why? Because the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back of the jersey.

Hector H. Lopez doesn't seem to understand that concept. He apparently gets pissed when he's not involved in something and decides to take his ball and go home. In my opinion, Hector's hemorrhoid he apparently has for me is because Greg Freyermuth and I were asked to co-moderate a big debate between Joe Moody and Dee Margo. That debate was broadcast on Talk Radio 1150.

Hector was not invited by the two organization that sponsored the debate, the College Republicans and the University Democrats. Greg and I didn't have control over who was invited and apparently Hector H. Lopez felt like it was a slight to him.

Honestly, even if we did have the power to invite him, we wouldn't have, especially after his performance at the Talk Radio 1150 debate earlier this year during the primary election. The guy seemed like the only question he was capable of asking was what the candidates' vision was. He apparently doesn't get that it was irrelevant to the races. But that really wasn't the point. The point was he was trying to make himself the star.

For God's sake, the candidates had to take him over their knee and spank him during the debate for not being able to move on and ask something of substance.

That's why he wanted to do election night coverage and Greg and I were left out.

Now rewind the movie for just a second. The day of the debate between Moody and Margo, Hector H. Lopez was on the air talking shit about the debate. I lost track of how many times he called it a “snoozer”. You didn't hear Greg and I start menstruating over the air because Hector H. Lopez hurt out little feelings.

So its total bullshit that Hector gets pissed at a couple of little critiques after he spent so much time talking shit about the debate. Like I said, if you dish it out, you should be able to take it.

When I asked Hector why he dragged me in to his on-air tantrum, he said it was because I linked to the piece that he praised on the air!

That's Hector H. Lopez for ya.

On a quick sidebar, I always seem to get the blame for linking to something someone else wrote. Remember the whole Hummer-gate scandal that the Avocadoan wrote about an alleged tryst involving a member of city council? I didn't write the piece, but I got the blame for it.

Here's what he doesn't get, while some of the stuff he's done is really cool, he doesn't understand that most listeners don't give a shit. But the elitist in him prevents him from grasping that fundamental point.

You have to connect your topic to things people in El Paso care about. Lets take his interview with the President of the Banana Republic, I mean the Dominican Republic. Why would anyone in El Paso care about that interview? I think its really kick ass that he was able to get an interview with a foreign head of state and that's something no one else on talk radio can say.

But why would a guy driving around in his delivery truck or an attorney in the courthouse give a shit? The answer is, they don't. They are too worried about stuff happening around town to be concerned with the President of Banana Republic.

Oh yeah, did I mention that the interview was in Spanish?

I'll be honest, it really pissed me off that Hector H. bought me in to this. He doesn't like me, resents me, whatever. I honestly don't care.

We are two different guys from two totally different worlds.

I'm Chicano, he's Hispanic.

He's educated, I'm the least educated guy on the radio.

I'm a street kid, he's a jet-setting Georgetown grad.

His on-air buddies are highly educated smart people that know everything about the world. Mine have seen the world through military service and on occassion have spent a little time in county jail.

I get it, we aren't as good as he is.

It probably irritates the shit out of him that people read my blog and listen to my show. But whatever his beef is, he should've left me out of it.

I've been told that Hector H. Lopez fancies himself a future congressman. Why else do you think he's always talking shit about the leadership in this town? Why else do you think he always talks about who are the next leaders for El Paso? Why do you think he's always critical of the congressman and the President?

Seriously, have you seen the picture gallery on his show's Facebook page?

Here's a guy who's a precinct chair that has not done anything in the Democratic Party. He criticizes everything but doesn't actually DO anything. The self-described Blue Dog Democratic is more like diet Republican than anything else.

I don't fault him for using his show to try to position himself as a future congressman. I just think that if he's going to criticize, he should be able to take it too. If he's going to have all these people from BFE, he should at least do a better job of having a local tie in to El Paso.

As for congressional hopes, he's not even in the conversation and I don't see any honest discussion of him being a congressional hopeful in his future. But then again what do I know, he's much more educated than I.

But if you ask me, there's nothing wrong with the wanna-be future congressman doing what ends ends his show with...Think Big!
