What To Watch for at the Democratic Convention

I will not be attending the Texas State Democratic Convention in Houston this year as planned. But there are some things to watch for. First, its going to probably the last major even that will be overseen by the outgoing chair of the El Paso Democratic Party Danny Anchondo. He will be stepping down soon and the new chair, Rick Melendrez will get back in control. The State Democratic Executive Committeeman/woman elections will be held. The current SDEC Don Williams is going to be challenged by Chente Quintanilla staffer Robert Grijalva and possibly another candidate but I'm still trying to confirm if that individual is in fact running. The SDEC woman side is particularly interesting. Remember, the SDEC's will have to work with the new chair. The current SDEC woman is Yolanda Clay. She's not a fan of Rick Melendrez. In fact she gave a pretty impassioned speech against his candidacy at a County Executive Committee Meeting. I'm not sure she would work with the guy. But I...

DINO's and a New Definition

This piece is going to make you say "Sas!" but I need to get it off my chest because I'm really bothered by the fact that Martha Dominquez won without trying.  We've been hearing a lot about DINOs lately. If you aren't familiar with the term it refers to people that are Democrat In Name Only.  Well, the buzz around town about Dominguez sounds a lot like "If Martha Dominguez is a viable candidate, anyone can be." So I have a new submission to the local vernacular of the Democratic Party.  DTS. Democrats that suck!

Dear Candidates for State Convention.....

Enough with the emails already!!!! Seriously, I don't know anything about any of you and none of you are actually going to get my support through a damn email that you sent from some list.  Its annoying the crap out of me. Except one. Mike Apodoca. Everyone should vote for him because he deserves it.  The rest are just annoying though.

More on Martha...

Okay so now we know that Martha Dominguez is in fact going to actually run for State Board of Education against the incumbent Charlie Garza in November. So here is the dilemma for me as a Democrat. How can I honestly feel okay about supporting her in the general election? Lucky for her Charlie Garza's extremist views make him impossible for me to support, but that is beside the point. That is an important race. You have to want it in order to win. You have to work hard. Especially because its a race that most people don't give a crap about. Some how Dominguez won a race she wasn't trying to win. She didn't make any freakin' effort to win, as evidenced by the fact that she didn't make any campaign expenditures. What she did was unfair to voters and to her opponents. Now she wants us to support her in November? Sorry, but you are going to have to EARN my vote after what you did. I don't think you should get by on straight ticket voting. If you want support fro...

Political Loyalty: Don't Expect It If You Don't Give It

Image
Frankly, following the loss of Congressman Reyes to Beto O'Rourke I have heard a lot of BS. I'm not really sure how much higher the BS can be stacked around here. Stop trying to externalize the loss. Yes, it sucks. But stop looking for someone to blame. Here's what I think is the most interesting development lately. Apparently some of the Reyes people are now complaining about loyalty. Newsflash - you didn't lose because of loyalty. He lost because of redistricting and turnout. Redistricting more than any other factor in this race changed the outcome of the race. Its that simple. But since we are on the conversation about loyalty, lets have a conversation about loyalty. The Reyes campaign screwed Vince Perez. Yeah, I said it. They sure did. Every chance they had to take a whack at Vince they took it. Lets start from the beggining. When Perez first expressed a desire to run for County Commissioner several members of the Congressman's campaign committee met with h...

The 2012 Primary Awards

Here are my awards for the 2012 Primary Elections. I threw this out on Facebook and Twitter and a few readers submitted some additional categories and they have been included. One of my female readers included a particularly funny award category. Here are the awards: Most Quotation Marks in One Sign Award – Rudy Loya Absolutely Nicest Guy on the Campaign Trail – Rudy Loya. Honorable Mention – Jaime Romo Best Poll Sitters / Workers – The Arditti Kids. Seriously the most-effective poll sitters. Bost Poll Sitters / Workers Honorable Mention – Rita Sarinana and Roberto Lerma (they are out there every year and Lerma is hilarious) Most Over-rated Social Media Campaign – Beto O'Rourke. Seriously, get off his sack about social media already. He owns a tech firm, it was supposed to have been good. Thats like a candidate that owns a sign company having good signs. They are supposed to. It was good, but it wasn't great. Biggest Upset of the Election – Martha Dominguez winning...

Robert Grijalva to Challenge Don Williams for SDEC

Robert Grijalva, staffer for State Representative Chente Quintanilla will take on Don Williams for SDEC at the Convention next week. Quintanilla is in a run-off election for El Paso County Commissioner Precinct #3 with Vince Perez. Grijalva confirmed over the phone this evening that he was going to be a candidate for the office. Grijalva stated that he really wasn't running against Don Williams but had his own set of ideas that he thought would be important to implement. Grijalva spoke about reversing the trend of decreased voter participation in elections and a stronger emphasis on Latino voter outreach. The SDEC is elected at the Texas State Democratic Convention which will be held later this week in Houston, Texas. The SDEC is elected by the El Paso delegates.
